From fossil colonialism to renewable colonialism? A critical conversation about energy transitions

Workshop hosted at the Klimacamp 2023, co-lectured with Saskia Brikkenaar van Dijk (Degrowth Vienna) on the topic of colonialism and mining for renewable energy transitions. We briefly introduce the dynamics of fossil colonialism to discuss how renewables reproduce similar colonial patterns. We explore cases in Latin America and Africa regarding the extraction and trade of minerals that play a key role in renewable energy alternatives to fossil fuels (e.g.: copper, lithium, cobalt). We ask “Who pays the price for the energy transition?” and explore what kind of solutions can truly commit to global justice.
